11th September 2019
It is with great sadness that I speak as the principal of St Oliver Post Primary School.
We learned today, Wednesday 11th September 2019, of the death of Darren Connell, one of our 6th year pupils.
This is a terrible tragedy for family, our school and our community. We are deeply saddened by these events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Connell family and friends.
We will have details on funeral arrangements over the coming days.
We have support structures in place to help students to cope with this tragedy. Our tutor system; peer mentor system; school guidance counsellor; school psychotherapist and external psychological support from NEPS (National Educational Psychology Service) will all be available to support our school community through this difficult time. Please let us know if you require support.
We have been in contact with Darren’s parents and they have requested that we all understand their need for privacy at this difficult time.
Our school has implemented our Critical Incident Management Plan.
Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) will be supporting and advising teachers in their efforts to assist our students at this time.
The teachers have been helping students to deal with the tragic event, and will continue to do so.
The school will communicate with parents, to support them and to offer them advice and guidance. Please click here for our support pack for parents, and here for the guidelines provided by the National Educational Psychology Service.
We would ask you to respect our privacy at this time.
